This book contains an extended version of the lecture notes of the Introduction to Applied Linguistics course we have taught in the past few years in various teacher training institutions. Our aim was to give students an overview of the major issues of applied linguistics and equip them with the background knowledge necessary to become professional teachers whose practice is grounded in theory. In the selection of the topics we consulted colleagues who teach various applied linguistics courses at universities and also took into consideration teacher trainers' recommendations.In each unit relevant and up-to-date theories and research findings are described in a note format. This is followed by check questions, which test the comprehension of the major ideas outlined in the unit. We have also designed tasks related to the topics which can be developed into small-scale research projects or even into a thesis. A detailed list of references and recommended readings is also provided at the end of every unit.The book can be used for self-study, as a complement to applied linguistics courses, and as an aid in the preparation for exams in this field.
